Place Name: Avenue De L'europe
Address: 345 Avenue De L'europe, 69220 Belleville-en-Beaujolais, France
Details:
Today's stage was a trip through Beaujolais wine country but the riders wouldn't have seen much of the countryside. For over 60KM, riders were attacking to make it into the break. It got to be so attritional that the first two in GC were among only about 20 riders remaining at the front of the race. Eventially a group did get a gap and these riders would fight for stage win. Throughout the afternoon, groups of dropped riders would tag on to the yellow jersey group and the peloton was restored. Just before the penultimate climb, Mathieu van der Poel went clear of the break and took Andrey Amador with him. Once on the climb, van der Poel dropped Amador and went solo. The remaining group didn't give up and it was Ion Izagirre pulling his Cofidis teammate Guillaume Martin to the front. Once the break was all back together, it was Ion Izagirre who attacked and only van der Poel could match but that he too was dropped shortly after. Izagirre soloed to victory as the last of the breakaway could not get established. It was Matteo Jorgenson finishing in third, just outsprinted by Mathieu Burgaudeau.
