Stage 1 offered up the first World Tour race and the opportunity to see the peloton in their new kit, all riding together. Finn Fisher-Black grabbed the first prize of the year with a three second sprint bonus early in the race. With about 118km to go, Georg Zimmermann got away with Louis Barré and they established the day's break. It was never going to make it to the line given the fast run in and desire from the sprinters to get their first win. Jayco Alula started the lead out with 5km to go but it was Bora Hansgrohe that bossed the finish. Sam Welsford was put in prime position and no other sprinter could come around. Welsford won the stage and wears the ochre jersey as race leader.
