Luke Burns and Jardi Van Der Lee kicked the day off and were the only attackers who made the breakaway. They were able to stretch their lead out to six and a half minutes but it was Bora Hansgrohe and Jayco Alula who controlled from the pack. Ineos then pitched in to bring the group back at about 20km remaining. Attacks started on the last uphill with 9km to go but the decisive one came with around 1km. Isaac del Toro leapt from the group which seemed to be disorganized. He held off the chasers with time to raise his hands in celebration of his first World Tour win. He wears the Ochre jersey going into Stage 3.
