Santos Tour Down Under 2024 Stage 5

January 20, 2024 An initial group of eight got away as the flag dropped but it was too big and an Ineos led peloton brought it back. Almost immediately after, four riders went free. Casper Pedersen, Samuele Battistella, Johan Jacobs, and Liam Walsh. These four rode hard and pushed the pace of the day to be quite fast but as they were nearing Wallunga for the first ascent, Pedersen was the only one remaining. Pedersen was caught just before the top of the first time up Wallunga Hill. 5km from the finish, UAE and Israel Premier Tech led the charge into the base of Willunga Hill. Chris Harper of Jayco Alula took over and ripped the bottom of the climb. Simon Yates let his wheel go and Harper was off in front with Oscar Onley on his wheel. Harper slowed which allowed the rest of the favorites to latch back on. With 1km to go, Yates made his move but had nine guys in his wheel. Julian Alaphilippe attacked and looked good but it was Onley who came over the top to take the win ahead of Stephen Williams and Jhonatan Narváez.
