A flat start but a tough finale as the race traversed down the coast and finished in Abruzzo. Teammates Alexander Konychev and Veljko Stojnić set off together, but with no other company. As the race turned inland, Trek-Segefredo and Jayco Alula ramped up their effort but it backfired for Trek-Segefredo as Mads Pedersen was dropped. He and the team fought and got back into the peloton but at a cost. As the sprint started, Pedersen was quickly overtaken by the fresher man, Michael Matthews of Jayco Alula.
