Place Name: Circuito Del Lago Laceno
Address: Circuito Del Lago Laceno, 83043 Bagnoli Irpino Avellino, Italy
Details: Riders rode under heavy skies but it didn't dampen the fight to get into the breakaway. Before the selection was made, a split appeared in the peloton and race leader Remco Evenepoel was not present in the front. He did make his way back and the break did form at 97KM into the stage. Those making the break were Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Nicola Conci, Vincenzo Albanese, Warren Barguil, Andreas Leknessund, Toms Skujiņš, and Amanuel Gebregziabher. Quickstep let off the gas to allow the break some breathing room and to potentially give the pink jersey away. Ineos wanted to keep pressure on the bunch so they took charge to reel in the break. Firepower at the front was too much though and the day would be won from the break. Surprisingly, Warren Barguil was the first dropped. Later up the climb, Leknessund attacked, bringing Paret-Peintre with him. Leknessund realized he could take pink, and in that moment he took up the pace, all but guaranteeing Paret-Peintre the stage win. Leknessund did take pink, giving the Norwegian his first day as a leader in a Grand Tour.
