Place Name: Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini
Address: Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini 29, 55049 Viareggio Lucca, Italy
Details:
Damp weather and a damp mood fell on the race after the first day. Race leader Remco Evenepoel withdrew from the Giro after testing positive for Covid. Geraint Thomas assumed the pink jersey and racing began as scheduled. Davide Bais, Alessandro De Marchi, Derek Gee, and Magnus Cort made up the breakaway. All throughout the stage, riders were stopping to change clothes to get warm. Many needed help as they could were too cold to move their hands and fingers. A number of crashes happened on the decent of Passo delle Radici mid-way through the stage, one of which included Jay Vine. He would get up but never make it back to the peloton, losing his spot in the GC top 10. Down off the mountain, UAE led the initial chase of the three up front. Bais had dropped previously. At 15KM to go, the gap was just under fifty seconds. The bunch could not get organized however, giving the break their day to play out a stage win. At 1500M, Derek Gee took his chance. Cort spent the effort to bring De Marchi along, seemingly knowing he was the faster man. No one could get free and indeed Magnus Cort was the fastest, taking his first stage in the Giro and completing the Grand Tour trilogy of a stage in all three.
