Place Name: Via Guglielmo Marconi
Address: Via Guglielmo Marconi 67, 21012 Cassano Magnago Varese, Italy
Details: A dry start for once but it wouldn't last long. 29 riders made the break and as Davide Bais of Eolo Kometa crested the Simplonpass first, the rain had started and was getting very cold. The peloton let the break get out to nearly 20 minutes but the break would split up closer to the finish. Davide Ballerini of Soudal Quickstep, Toms Skujiņš of Trek-Segafredo, Laurenz Rex of Intermarché-Circus-Wanty and Stefano Oldani of Alpecin-Deceuninck got away and had a lead of 1 minute with 17KM to go. A chase group would form and work well, bringing the gap down to 17 seconds with 8KM to go. Rex dropped out of the front to join the chase group, making five chasing three. In the last 800M, Oldani was first to attack from the front as the chase was just behind. It was a long sprint, gradually uphill and he faded. As the chase caught the front riders at 300M, Alberto Bettiol of EF-Education Easy Post attacked with Nico Denz of Bora-Hansgrohe and Derek Gee of Israel-Premier Tech on his wheel. Bettiol didn't have enough to hold it to the line though, as Nico Denz powered passed to take the win. Derek Gee nearly got Denz on a bike throw but it was another second place for the Canadian. Bettiol managed to hold on for third. Bruno Armirail of Groupama-FDJ came in 50 seconds after Denz but given the enormous time gap back to the peloton, Armirail would take over as race leader, 1 minute 41 seconds over Geraint Thomas.
