Giro d'Italia 2023 Stage 16

point
Place Name: Strada Delle Viote
Address: Strada Delle Viote 1, 38123 Trento Trentino, Italy
Details: The race leaves the banks of Lake Garda to take on mountain after mountain to finish on Monte Bondone after 203KM and 5,500M of climbing, the most of any stage in this Giro. The first hour was rapid along the lake at nearly 52KM ridden. A large group finally did get away but Jumbo-Visma set their sights on making the race tough and kept the break within 5 minutes the entire day. When the break hit Monte Bondone with 20KM to go, their lead had shrunk to just 3 minutes and they would all be caught before the top. Pink jersey Bruno Armirail of Groupama-FDJ was dropped with 10KM to go as UAE took control and increased the pace in the peloton. João Almeida of UAE was first to move from the GC group with Geraint Thomas of Ineos following. Sepp Kuss paced his Jumbo-Visma teammate Primož Roglič but Roglič had slid to 30 seconds back with 500M to go. Almeida opened his sprint long for a 200M drag but he had the legs to hold off Thomas to take his first Grand Tour stage win and the third for UAE at the race. Roglič managed well and limited his loss to just 25 seconds. Thomas took over the GC by 18 seconds to Almeida and 29 to Roglič.
