Giro d'Italia 2023 Stage 20 - View 1
Place Name: Localita' Monte Lussari
Address: Localita' Monte Lussari 13, 33018 Tarvisio Udine, Italy
Details:
A mountain TT caps off the GC race for 2023. Stunning views atop Monte Lussari mark the end of another Grand Tour fight but the gaps are close and there is still everything to play for. Brandon McNulty of UAE, Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma, then Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ set fast early times and they would only be beaten by the top four overall. Primož Roglič of Jumbo-Visma went through the first half in the fastest time. Behind, Geraint Thomas of Ineos not only made a bike change but also swapped out his helmet, taking seconds longer but was within 2 seconds of Roglič at the bottom of the climb. Roglič was climbing really well until he hit a drain in the road and dropped his chain. A quick bike change and strong push got him going again. He roared up the final part of the climb, knocking off Damiano Caruso of Bahrain-Victorious and João Almeida of UAE. Only Thomas was still on course but he was slowing with each pedal stroke. By the time he crossed the line, he had lost the stage by 40 seconds but more importantly, the Giro by just 14 seconds.
