Stage 5 was marked by the Alto del Vino in the finale. It is a grueling, long climb at altitude that would certainly set up the final GC. EF Education EasyPost came with a strong team and were intent on making the race hard. With 13KM to go, Esteban Chaves made the first attack. A KM later, Chaves brought back and Richard Carapaz tries his turn. Rodrigo Contreras, current race leader, went with him and were away for a number of KM's. At 10KM, Chavez was able to bridge up to the front and eventually Egan Bernal and Jonathan Caicedo made it across too, making a group of five. At 5KM, Carapaz made a very determined move. Caicedo was just two bike lengths off his wheel but never made it on. Carapaz kept piling on the pressure and was loose. Contreras kept his pace to avoid blowing up and was able to keep his overall lead but Carapaz took the stage win and sits 21 seconds down with one day left to race.
