Rain and wind battered the riders from the moment the flag dropped. The temperature was also quite low making for a difficult and attritional stage. A large group made the break but Visma-Lease a Bike held control of the race in the peloton. The final climb was done twice on the finishing circuit. On the first ascent, the break was reduced to only two riders and the peloton had roughly thirty remaining. At the base of the last climb, Alex Molenaar of Balears Arabay Cycling went off alone but behind, Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike leapt clear with only Egan Bernal of Ineos and Jefferson Cepeda of Caja-Rural could follow. The trio caught Molenaar who latched on and fought bravely but was eventually dropped. With 900M before the top of the climb and only 3.5KM to the finish, Vingegaard accelerated and got a gap on the others. He was able to solo to the line to take the victory and a gap in GC of twenty eight seconds on Bernal with two stages remaining.
