The break went immediately as the flag dropped and it was Davide Bais of Polti-Kometa, Filippo Magli of Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, and Lorenzo Quartucci and Jan Stockli of Team Corratec-Vini Fantini, taking the opportunity to get up the road. The break was caught at 36KM as the peloton continued their journey to the finishing circuit. Speed started to ramp up with 20KM due to the complicated route around and through Follonica. Mark Cavendish of Astana flatted, a long wheel change doomed his chances but there were plenty of other big sprinters looking for the win. Intermarché - Wanty looked to have perfected their timing coming into the sprint but got squeezed out on the last right hand corner with 200M to go. Biniam Girmay tried to hold his position but was relegated for an irregular sprint. Tim Merlier of Soudal Quickstep made his dash and got through the corner first. It may have been one match burned too many because with 100M to go, Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck came off the wheel and accelerated through the line to take the win. Merlier salvaged second place with Axel Zingle of Cofidis taking third.
