Other than the Stage 1 ITT, no real opportunities have presented themselves for the GC riders to make or gain time until today. Over 3000M of vertical altitude awaited the riders. A strong group went up the road but Visma-Lease a Bike kept the lid on them with no more than two or three minutes advantage. Before the San Giacomo climb, the peloton brought back the gap to just thirty seconds. Last of the break caught halfway up, Visma-Lease a Bike split the bunch to pieces and at the steepest part of the climb, Jonas Vingegaard attacked with no real reaction. Ben O'Connor of Decathlon AG2R and Jai Hindley of Bora-Hansgrohe formed a chase but the pair were caught by Isaac del Toro and Juan Ayuso of UAE, Thymen Arensman of Ineos, and Cian Uijtdebroeks of Visma-Lease a Bike. Vingegaard crested the climb with 23KM to go with a gap of almost a minute. He only gained time to the finish, managing to extend his lead to a minute and twelve seconds as Ayuso coming across second with Hindley in third. Vingegaard now holds an overall advantage of fifty four seconds over Ayuso.
