Address: Route De La Madone D'utelle, 06450 Utelle, France
Details: March 9, 2024
Poor weather forced the route to be changed to only 103KM and new finish on La Madone d'Utelle. Benjamin Thomas of Cofidis and Johan Jacobs of Movistar made up the break but did not have much of a gap as Soudal Quickstep and Visma-Lease a Bike kept the pace high in the bunch. Thomas dropped out of the break at 37KM to go leaving Jacobs to ride solo. The riders all looked like they were on auto-pilot, just trying to get through the day given the cold and pouring rain they had experienced for the entire stage. Teams woke up when they hit the base of La Madone d'Utelle as they positioned their leaders into the climb. Jacobs was caught at 14KM to go by the Soudal Quickstep led peloton. Ineos took over with 7.5KM to go for Egan Bernal who grabbed a few bonus seconds at an intermediate sprint point. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep was first to move with 4.3KM to go but made no gap. Aleksandr Vlasov of Bora-Hansgrohe countered and got away immediately. Evenepoel attacked again at 2KM, this time splitting the group leaving race leader Brandon McNulty of UAE behind to chase. Vlasov held on for the win, Evenepoel took the sprint for second and McNulty's lead was trimmed down to just four seconds with one day remaining.
