The peloton set off in sunny but still wet conditions. Groups were all over the road as rain started falling once more but Victor Campenaerts of Lotto-Dstny had a lead of ninety seconds over the yellow jersey group with two groups split up in the middle. Campenaerts was caught at 47KM to go as the group hit the bottom of the Côte de Peille. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep sprung a surprise attack leaving just the main contenders in a small group. He tried again but everyone was ready and immediately on the wheel. A third attack came 3KM from the top, this time he was able to bring just Matteo Jorgenson with him. Brandon McNulty of UAE was forced to chase and only Aleksandr Vlasov of Bora-Hansgrohe could stay on his wheel. Vlasov made a sharp move away from McNulty and quickly got across to the two others. On the road to the Col d’Èze, the gap had extended to over a minute as the McNulty group did not have the steam to get back on par. Vlasov could not manage Evenepoel's pace and was dropped with 1KM remaining on the final climb but Jorgenson was rock solid and even seemed to be half wheeling Evenepoel near the top. The pair dropped into Nice where Evenepoel took the stage win and Jorgenson won the Overall GC and is the first American to do so. McNulty came in nearly two minutes later but was able to keep a final podium spot.
