Details:
March 9, 2024 A powerful break of nine formed on the way to the uphill finish of Monte Petrano. Visma-Lease a Bike led the peloton and did not give the break any free time. On a climb with 45KM to go, Ben Healy of EF-Education EasyPost started a pace that took riders off the back of the break one by one. When the leaders went over the top, they had extended their gap to the peloton to nearly two minutes but had reduced the group to just four with 39KM remaining. The penultimate climb was more of the same, Healy dropped one more rider before pulling off, leaving his teammate Richard Carapaz and Andreas Leknessund of Uno-X Mobility at the front. The pair hit the final climb at 10KM to go with only a bit over a minute. Bora-Hansgrohe were the ones making the pace in the peloton and had the group reduced to about fifteen riders within the first 4KM of Monte Petrano. When the last rider for Bora-Hansgrohe pulled off, Jai Hindley attacked, bringing with him only Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike and Juan Ayuso of UAE. Carapaz was caught just over 6KM from the top, Hindley took a moment to assess the group and Vingegaard pounced. Vingegaard kept the pressure on until Ayuso could hold the wheel no more, then he started his rhythm and pulled his gap out meter by meter. Vingegaard went on to win by half a minute as Ayuso took the sprint ahead of Hindley for second and third, which is the GC podium going into the final stage.
