March 13, 2024 A group of three led the race for the majority of the day but the peloton was interested in keeping the race close in anticipation of the final two climbs and the run to the finish. It was all together at 37KM to go as UAE set up a furious pace into and up the first climb. Alberto Bettiol of EF-Education EasyPost came out of the wheels like a rocket and had nearly half a minute as he started the decent. Bora-Hansgrohe had five riders in the chase group but could not pull back any time on Bettiol. A big push by Gianluca Brambilla of Q36.5 followed by Nick Schultz of Israel-Premier Tech brought the chase group of fifteen to within just twelve seconds at the top of the final climb. Bettiol continued to press on the pedals, Bora-Hansgrohe got re-organized but the gap see-sawed back and forth. The chasers had Bettiol in sight at 7KM to go. The last Bora chaser pulled off and counter attacks started to fly. A smaller group of five got together but no one seemed to want to work to close down the gap of only six seconds. Jan Christen of UAE darted out of the bunch in solo pursuit of the leader but never get on terms. Bettiol finished it off with the win as Christen came in next for seconds place.
