Details:
March 21, 2024 The peloton trundled their way out of the mountains and onto the plain for the first real opportunity for the few fast men in the race. A group of three led the race from the start, Idar Andersen of Uno-X Mobility, Urko Berrade of Equipo Kern Pharma, and Thomas De Gendt of Lotto-Dstny, but their chances of challenging for the win were slim since there was enough sprint interest to keep a short leash. De Gendt made an acceleration with 60KM to go that only Andersen could cope with, dropping Berrade. The pair went on working well together but the peloton would not be fooled by De Gendt's tactics. De Gendt and Andersen eventually gave up when their lead was cut to one minute and they were caught around 30KM to go. It was a steady ride into the finish on wide roads so the fight for position wasn't that fierce until about 5KM to go. At that point, there were numerous roundabouts to negotiate and it was Ineos leading. Everyone got through the obstacles safely and it was Bryan Coquard of Cofidis who started the sprint first. It would have been a long sprint of the finish was flat, but with a gradual incline, Coquard was not going to be able to hold on. Marijn Van den Berg of EF-Education EasyPost came off Coquard's wheel and was able to fend off Arne Marit of Intermarché-Wanty and Emils Liepins of DSM-Firmenich PostNL to take the win.
