The opening stage of Itzulia was a busy one. Before the ITT started, Tom Pidcock of Ineos crashed on the recon and had to abandon. All of the main favorites went out early due to a concern with weather later in the day. Primož Roglič of Bora-Hansgrohe took a wrong turn down the deviation and had to back track to the finish line but still set the fastest time and would hold on for the win. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep over cooked a corner through town and came down. He ended fourth on the day, eleven seconds back. Jay Vine of UAE and Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek rounded out the podium on the first day of racing.
