Hard roads, constantly up or down but the expectation was a sprint. A group of five got away, then four led the way as a Kern Pharma rider dropped back to the peloton. The break was caught around 12KM to go, shortly before the intermediate sprint with bonus seconds on offer. Ineos led the pace going towards the sprint with UAE nudging up beside. It was hotly contested and taken by Isaac Del Toro of UAE with Juan Ayuso of UAE taking two seconds and Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep taking one. A series of downhill left and rights caused a number of riders to go down in different crashes and the peloton was greatly reduced. In the sprint, Decathlon AG2R, Astana, and Movistar were all battling for the advantage but it was Paul Lapeira of Decathlon AG2R who got it. Samuele Battistella of Astana took second and Louis Vervaeke of Soudal Quickstep snuck in for third.
