Details: April 16, 2024 5 riders made it over the mid-stage climb of the Brenner pass in the front, with Ineos moderating the gap to keep their overall race lead in tact. With 33KM to race, the break was reduced to 3 riders with a gap over the peloton of 3 minutes. Patrick Gamper of Bora-Hansgrohe attacked the other two riders, Alessandro De Marchi of Jayco AlUla and Simon Pellaud of Tudor Pro Cycling. The peloton sat up after Ineos stopped their chase, leaving Gamper with a 3:30 minutes advantage on the bunch and 20 seconds to the two chasers with 21KM to go. Gamper was caught by De Marchi and Pellaud on the steep lower slopes of the Gnadenwald climb and dropped immediately. With 2.5KM still to climb, De Marchi attacked Pellaud and went solo. Pellaud and Gamper got together but they could not close the gap, leaving De Marchi with the victory. Gamper took the sprint for second, Pellaud third. The peloton came in shortly after but with little to fight for with no bonus seconds left on the line.
