Tour de Romandie 2024 Stage 1

point
Place Name: Boulevard De Pérolles
Address: Boulevard De Pérolles 57, 1700 Fribourg, Switzerland
Details: April 24, 2024 Storms threatened to make a lumpy stage even more difficult but fortunately the rain stayed away. Six riders got up the road with just over 3 minutes lead at 70KM to go with EF-Education EasyPost, Lidl-Trek and Movistar chasing. At 37KM to go, the peloton hit a short cobbled climb and attacks started flying. UAE sent Jan Christen up the road followed by Richard Carapaz of EF-Education EasyPost and David Gaudu of Groupama-FDJ. The trio were caught 5KM later but the skirmish brought the break's lead down to just one minute seventeen seconds. The break worked really well and stayed all together but the pace put on by Movistar had the peloton within 30 seconds at 10KM from the finish. The break was in touching distance at 9.5KM to go and Julian Alaphilippe of Soudal Quickstep jumped off the front of the peloton. The catch was made within a few hundred meters but it did mean that the race was all back together as the peloton caught both he and the break at the same moment. Rune Herregodts of Intermarché-Wanty who was in the original break had more to give and was next to go but he lasted as long out front as Alaphilippe did. The road tipped down to descend into town for the finish, Movistar took up the pace making a bunch sprint the likely scenario. Lidl-Trek looked most organized as they went under the 1KM banner. The speed was very high as the peloton hit a dip down and Decathlon AG2R timed things perfectly. Dorian Godon was leading out Andrea Vendrame but the meters ticked by and no one would come around. Godon took the victory with Vendrame just behind making first and second for the French team, Gianni Vermeersch of Alpecin-Deceuninck took the final podium spot. Godon took over the GC as well with his win and continued Decathlon AG2R's winning ways.
