Details:
April 25, 2024 The first of two summit finishes promised the first real separation between the GC contenders. Seven riders got in the break and got out to three and half minutes as they made their way up the first of the two main climbs at 62KM remaining. EF-Education EasyPost took control of the peloton and seemed to be putting a lot of effort into the chase. Five riders, Andrea Vendrame of Decathlon AG2R, Roger Adrià of Bora-Hansgrohe, Thibau Nys of Lidl-Trek, Xandro Meurisse of Alpecin-Deceuninck, and Xabier Azparren of Q36.5 Pro Cycling, went over the top of Les Mosses with just under 3 minutes. They descended to the valley road passing through Aigle and started the final climb of Les Marécottes with 8.5KM and just under 3 minutes ahead of the peloton. At 3.4KM to go, the peloton had the leaders back to just 1 minute but Vandrame and Nys set off together to quicken the pace. Just as Meurisse got back to the pair up front, Luke Plapp of Jayco AlUla attacked the peloton with Florian Lipowitz of Bora-Hansgrohe. Lipowitz was dropped just as Plapp joined the leading trio at 1.3KM to go. Meurisse was next to be dispatched while Plapp drove the pace. Vendrame kicked at 250M from the line and had Nys on the barriers but the curved left, giving Nys an opening. Nys took the sprint, Vendrame held on for second place with Plapp in third. A large peloton rolled in about 15 seconds later. With the bonus seconds, Nys took over the race lead going into the ITT on Stage 3.
