Details:
April 27, 2024 Crystal clear skies drew in after the previous day's rain, leaving perfect racing conditions for the main GC stage of the race. Bart Lemmen of Visma-Lease a Bike, Clément Berthet and Dorian Godon of Decathlon AG2R, Raúl García Pierna of Arkéa-B&B Hotels, and Nelson Oliveira of Movistar were the main escapees for the day. Their lead was down to 90 seconds as they hit the category 2 climb of Les Rives with 61KM to go with UAE driving a reduced peloton. Ineos took over on the climb as the break was reduced to just Lemmen and Berthet. Berthet went solo and got over the penultimate climb still with 75 seconds of a lead. Berthet survived the flat valley road through Aigle and hit the final climb of Leysin with just one minute and 15KM to the top and the finish. Berthet was caught with 5.3KM to go just as Egan Bernal of Ineos attacked. He was brought back but weaknesses in the group began to show. Bernal sat on the front of the 8 man group but as he pulled off, Florian Lipowitz of Bora-Hansgrohe attacked and brought Richard Carapaz of EF-Education EasyPost and Carlos Rodríguez of Ineos with him. Carapaz attacked and went solo at 2.2KM to go. He had a handy lead and looked like his win would be a comfortable one but Lipowitz attacked Rodríguez at 400M from the line. He crossed the gap to Carapaz very quickly but he ran out of road. Carapaz put his hands up in victory just as Lipowitz reached his back wheel. Rodríguez came in third place but made up enough time to take over the lead in GC.
