John Degenkolb of DSM-Firmenich and Warre Vangheluwe of Soudal Quickstep led the race in the break but as the crested the Mammolshain, their lead had been to cut to just 1 minute. Degenkolb said goodbye to break on the Feldberg in front of home crowds as Vangheluwe's lead had been reduced to just 30 seconds. Vangheluwe was caught with 89KM to race by UAE who were driving the peloton quickly up the Feldberg. 25 to 30 riders went over the top together with 85KM but there were too many riders with no cooperation, leaving space for opportunists. A series of attacks and counter attacks came from Roger AdriĆ of Bora-Hansgrohe then Darren Rafferty of EF-Education EasyPost. Rafferty's teammate Ben Healy and German Champion Emanuel Buchmann of Bora-Hansgrohe were next to go but they were caught at 54KM to go as the race settled before the last ascent of the Mammolshain climb. Jan Christen of UAE was the only one to attack on the Mammolshain but a group of about 20 gathered together over the top and had 35KM to get Christen back before the finish. Christen hit the short local laps around Frankfurt with just a 10 second gap to hold for 8KM. The chasing group got slightly larger on the run in with Lidl-Trek, Bora-Hansgrohe and Alpecin-Deceuninck leading the charge. Christen's huge effort came to an end at 2.2KM to go by a group set for a reduced bunch sprint. Alex Aranburu of Movistar emerged from the pack in the last 100M and looked to have the win but a kick by Maxim Van Gils of Lotto-Dstny was enough to snatch the victory for the Belgian. Aranburu held on for second place as Riley Sheehan of Israel-Premier Tech came home for third.
