Sunny Southern Italian skies shined down on the peloton for a potential breakaway success up the Bocca Della Selva. Simon Clarke of Israel-Premier Tech and Quinten Hermans of Alpecin-Deceuninck got away right at the start but the peloton did not calm down. Plenty of teams were interested in getting in the break and the pair's lead was tenuous for over 20KM. Alessandro De Marchi of Jayco AlUla bridged up solo to make three at the front. On a few occasions it looked like a larger group would form but one team or another would have missed it and would pull it back. At 90KM to go, Hermans dropped out of the front, leaving just De Marchi and Clarke. A huge group broke clear on a 3.5KM uncategorized climb with 76KM to go. They had 30 seconds on the UAE led peloton over the top and still 30 seconds to close on the two leaders. On the Camposauro climb, the larger chase group caught the two leaders. By the summit at 56KM from the finish, they had extended their lead to the peloton to 4 minutes. Unfortunately Clarke paid for his earlier efforts and was dropped on the climb. Through the Inter Giro sprint point, the break split into three pieces. Jan Tratnik of Visma-Lease a Bike went off solo to get a jump start before the climb. A group of four formed a chase including Andrea Bagioli of Lidl-Trek, Romain Bardet of DSM-Firmenich, Valentin Paret-Peintre of Decathlon AG2R and Marco Frigo of Israel-Premier Tech. The other 20+ riders languished behind, losing time as the cooperation went out of the group. The gaps stayed relatively stable as Tratnik hit the bottom of the 18KM climb of Bocca Della Selva. Frigo then Bagioli were dropped, leaving just Bardet and Valentin Paret-Peintre to chase. Tratnik was riding very well and extended his lead to around one minute with 12KM to the top. Bardet and Paret-Peintre worked really together, reducing Tratnik's lead to under 30 seconds with 4KM to go. Paret-Peintre attacked Bardet at 3.2KM on a steeper section and was straight across to Tratnik in no time. He attacked Tratnik right away and was gone. Paret-Peintre continued up the climb and crossed the line first for his first professional victory. Bardet was next, gaining some time back in GC and Tratnik held on for third. In the GC group, Bahrain-Victorious was quite aggressive but, in the end, most of the favorites finished together. A few riders were detached in the sprint, finishing just 4 seconds later.
