Place Name: Via Bologna
Address: Via Bologna 1, 44042 Cento Ferrara, Italy
Details:
May 17, 2024 The piadina stage through coastal Emilia-Romagna offered no classified climbs with the only bumps being bridges over roads or railway lines. Andrea Pietrobon of Polti-Kometa was joined by Alessandro Tonelli and Manuele Tarozzi of Bardiani CSF-Faizanè to make up the break but they were given no more than 2 minutes for the entire stage. Sprint teams kept the pace in the peloton until Ineos hit the front to split things in the cross wind with 62KM to go. A few sprinters were caught in the second split but the wind speed and direction was not strong enough and it all came back together with 43.5KM to race. The initial breakaway were caught in the process at 53KM to go. The rest of the stage was just like any other bunch sprint in a Grand Tour. The sprinter's team were fighting with the GC teams for space at the front. Ineos led the peloton through the narrow points going into 3KM to go. Lidl-Trek came with numbers at 2KM and bossed the rest of the stage. Fernando Gaviria of Movistar started his sprint at 350M to go and Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek jumped on his wheel. Milan came around in dominant fashion at 200M to take his third win in this Giro. He showed a clean pair of wheels to the next best rider, Stanisław Aniołkowski of Cofidis and Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain-Victorious.
