Only four riders took up the challenge of escaping the peloton. Lidl-Trek controlled again with Jacopo Mosca and Dario Cataldo riding on the front for a large part of the stage. The break was reduced to three riders but still held a margin of 2 minutes 40 seconds with 34KM to go. Q36.5 put some resources to the chase and with the collective positioning into the climb, the break's gap tumbled to 30 seconds as they hit the final climb with 7KM to go. Tudor Pro Cycling kept the group in one long line and thinned it down to around ten with 4KM to go. When the last Tudor rider pulled off, Marco Brenner attacked but still had five riders on his wheel. The pace went out, allowing a few more riders to come back. With 1KM to go, the road tipped down and a group of ten formed at the front to contest a reduced sprint. Axel Laurance of Alpecin-Deceuninck was shot from a cannon at 200M to go on the slight uphill. He took the stage win and also the GC top spot. Ethan Hayter of Ineos was next in with Bart Lemmen of Visma-Lease a Bike crossing the line in third.
