June 7, 2024 A tough finishing climb up Le Collet d’Allevard would give the specialist climbers a chance to claw back time on GC after the ITT on Stage 4. Six riders made the break including Magnus Cort of Uno-X Mobility, Romain Grégoire of Groupama-FDJ, Thibault Guernalec of Arkéa-B&B Hotels, Arjen Livyns of Lotto-Dstny, Mason Hollyman of Israel-Premier Tech and Alessandro Fancellu of Q36.5. Their lead stood at 5 minutes 40 seconds with 59KM to go as they rode toward the Col du Granier. The break were pushing on the descent to hold as much of their advantage as they could before the final climb. Guernalec took a wide line and went into the bushes. Hollyman was following and went over the bars. Both riders landed in the grass, got back up and seemed to be fine. Guernalec made it back to the break but Hollyman drifted to the peloton. At 30.4KM, the race motor bike at the front of the break and the organizer's red car took a wrong turn, leading the break away off course. They got back reasonably quickly but their lead had been reduced down to just 3 minutes. The peloton brought back another minute by the time the break hit the bottom of le Collet d’Allevard. Ineos led the way in the bunch and with 5KM to climb, Laurens De Plus of Ineos attacked and Aleksandr Vlasov of Bora-Hansgrohe followed. The pair caught Grégoire, the last of the breakaway, at 4KM to go with the peloton 15 seconds behind. Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek made a big move, drawing out four other riders and cracking race leader Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep in the process. The five chasers joined De Plus and Vlasov at 1.6KM to go including Vlasov's teammate Primož Roglič. Once they joined, Vlasov got the front to build Roglič's gap to Evenepoel and the others. Only Roglič and Ciccone could follow Vlasov. Vlasov pulled off at 300M, leaving Roglič and Ciccone to fight for the stage win. When Roglič started his sprint, Ciccone had no answers. Roglič won the stage and took the leader's jersey. Ciccone came in next with Vlasov in third. In the GC behind Roglič, Evenepoel is 19 seconds back with Jorgenson moving a little closer to 58 seconds.
