Details:
June 9, 2024 Eleven riders made the break on another mountainous stage, the final of this year's race. Nine riders went over the top of Le Salève with just under 58KM to go and a lead back to the Ineos led peloton of 2 minutes 20 seconds. Lidl-Trek were keen to take on the chase and trimmed the break back to just 25 seconds as they started the 9KM climb to Plateau des Glières. Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek attacked from the peloton very early at 8.2KM to go. The last of the break were caught just 600M later by Ciccone who had pulled out 15 seconds from the GC group. Laurens De Plus of Ineos took over the pace in the bunch at 6.2KM to go, bringing Ciccone back and trimming the GC group to just seven riders. Carlos Rodríguez of Ineos attacked, Matteo Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike latched on as race leader Primož Roglič of Bora-Hansgrohe was slightly distanced. Santiago Buitrago of Bahrain-Victorious and Derek Gee of Israel-Premier Tech got on with De Plus making five at the front. Jorgenson noticed that Roglič was distanced and put pressure on with Rodríguez. Roglič was left to soldier on alone. Gee put in an effort, leaving only Jorgenson and Rodríguez left at the front. The three leaders had 30 seconds on Roglič as the road flattened with 2KM to go. Gee dropped out of the front group at 1.5KM to go as Jorgenson and Rodríguez continued to push to the finish line. Rodríguez came across the line first with Jorgenson behind. Gee came in next, 16 seconds back but everyone's eyes went to Roglič as he had to fight to keep his lead on GC. In the end, Roglič finished 48 seconds back on Jorgenson on the stage which was just enough to keep his GC lead and win the Critérium du Dauphiné overall by 8 seconds in front of Jorgenson. Gee finished strongly to take the final podium place overall.
