The route ventured back into Switzerland, after the opening day was spent in Liechtenstein, offering one of the only chances for the sprinters to get a victory. With lumpy terrain and a Category 3 climb 10KM from the finish however, it was not a guarantee that all the fast men would make it to the line. Five riders got up the road to make the break of the day but only four were left after the second categorized climb, Gerben Kuypers of Intermarché-Wanty, Antoine Debons of Corratec-Vini Fantini, and Luca Jenni and Félix Stehli of the Swiss National Team. Their lead was 4 minutes 30 seconds with 81KM to go. Alpecin-Deceuninck and Soudal Quickstep did the majority of the chasing, slowly reeling the break in to a 90 second lead with 27KM to go. Jenni was the final rider from the break to be caught at 11KM to go, before the top of the final climb. A group of about 40 went over the top together, led by Alpecin-Deceuninck charging hard. Alberto Bettiol of EF-Education EasyPost attacked in a moment of calm at 4.5KM to go after the descent. Lotto-Dstny and Decathlon AG2R had enough resources to get organized and bring back Bettiol just before the 1KM to go banner. As Lotto-Dstny went through the final corner and pulled off, Bryan Coquard of Cofidis was there to start his sprint. Arnaud De Lie of Lotto-Dstny was on his wheel and started his sprint but seemed to mis-shift and had to sit down. Coquard kept going and held on for the win as Michael Matthews of Jayco AlUla came around De Lie to finish in second, De Lie third.
