A hockey stick profile sent the riders around the lakes of Zurich to make their way up the finish of the cobbled Gotthard Pass. Eight riders made the break after about 30 minutes of racing. Silvan Dillier of Alpecin-Deceuninck, Torstein Træen of Uno-X Mobility, Bryan Coquard of Cofidis, teammates Lilian Calmejane and Gerben Kuypers of Intermarché-Wanty, Michael Matthews of Jayco AlUla, Roland Thalmann of Tudor Pro Cycling, and Jan Sommer of the Swiss National Team. There were no threats to the GC in the break so the peloton let their lead get to nearly 7 minutes with 50KM still race. The final 34KM were all uphill but the break managed to stay together until 19KM to go when Træen, Dillier, and Thalmann went clear. It wasn't long before Dillier was dispatched. Thalmann and Træen worked well to fend off the peloton, still holding 3 minutes 45 seconds with 11KM to go. Træen was the stronger rider, dropping Thalmann on pure diesel power at 10KM to go. Træen still had 3 minutes with 5KM to race on a peloton of at least 30 riders. At that point, UAE started to ride and immediately reduced the bunch. There were a few probing attacks but at 4KM to go, Adam Yates of UAE attacked with no response from the others. A chase group formed of seven riders but they couldn't seem to get organized enough to eat into Yate's lead. Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek attacked out of that chase group bringing Egan Bernal of Ineos and João Almeida of UAE with him. Yates was powering to the finish and got within 30 seconds of Træen at 1KM to go but luckily for Træen, the road flattened and the speed picked up, giving him enough time to sit up for the victory. Yates came in 23 seconds later with Skjelmose sprinting ahead of Almeida for second and third on the stage. Yates took over the GC lead by 26 seconds on Almeda and Skjelmose who are locked on the same time.
