The peloton got a good look at the finish climb as the route passed the finish in the first 30KM of the stage. A strong group of climbers broke clear and made their way down the valley and back up towards the village of Carì. Alexey Lutsenko of Astana, Nans Peters of Decathlon AG2R, Einer Rubio of Movistar, Johannes Staune-Mittet of Visma-Lease a Bike, and Stephen Williams of Israel-Premier Tech were the attackers on the day but their lead was only 2 minutes back to the UAE led peloton with 70KM to race. The uncategorized climbing started around 25KM from the finish and the break was losing time quite quickly. They hit 12KM to go with just 30 seconds as the peloton was surging to gain position into the climb. Rubio was the last one caught with 11KM to go, just up from the base of the climb. A few early attacks went and came back as Ineos then UAE took control on the climb. João Almeida of UAE took over at 6.5KM to go and went to 1.5KM, trimming the group from 25 down to just 5 riders. Adam Yates of UAE attacked when Almeida pulled off but he did not get the gap like he did on Stage 4. Enric Mas of Movistar and Egan Bernal of Ineos were able to follow but the last of the five riders, Matthew Riccitello, was distanced. Yates continued to press on, dropping Bernal with 1KM to go. Mas couldn't keep in contact with Yates either, dropping away just 200M later. On the line, Yates took the win ahead of Almeida who went passed the other three riders to take second place, 5 seconds back. Bernal, Riccitello, then Mas crossed the line around 20 seconds later.
