Eight riders were strong enough to get away from the peloton to make the break for the final mountain test of this year's race. Ineos were riding in the bunch and had the break at just over 1 minute with 60KM to go. Johannes Staune-Mittet of Visma-Lease a Bike left his breakaway companions on the second time up the Col de la Croix. The rest of the break were caught with 52KM to go as Staune-Mittet's lead was diminished to 45 seconds. Staune-Mittet led the race down the descent, through Aigle, and started the 12KM climb to Villar-sur-Ollon with 1 minute 10 seconds. Staune-Mittet put up a good fight but he was caught with 4KM to go by Felix Gall of Decathlon AGR2 who attacked out of the peloton. Brandon Rivera of Ineos did a pile of work, driving the peloton over the Col de la Croix and up Villar-sur-Ollon, finally pulling off at 3KM to go. João Almeida of UAE attacked at that point, drawing his teammate Adam Yates, Matthew Riccitello of Israel-Premier Tech and Wilco Kelderman of Visma-Lease a Bike. Kelderman couldn't handle the pace and drifted off the wheel. Gall was reeled in with 1.8KM to go as Yates counter attacked. Almeida covered, seemingly either battling with his teammate or so confident that everyone else would be dropped. Fortunately for Almeida, Riccitello and the others were distanced, leaving just the UAE teammates together. Yates led the pair through the finish line to take the win and 10 bonus seconds with Almeida by his side, hands aloft. Riccitello stayed within himself to hold on for third place, 14 seconds behind.
