July 10, 2024 4,300M of climbing through the Massif Central offered a prime chance for a strong break to have their fun on the roads to Le Lioran. Attempts to make a break lasted 80KM until the first categorized climb. Richard Carapaz and Ben Healy of EF-Education EasyPost were very aggressive, they were joined by Mattéo Vercher of TotalEnergies, Oier Lazkano of Movistar, Paul Lapeira of Decathlon AG2R, and Oscar Onley of DSM-Firmenich. 20KM later, Romain Grégoire of Groupama-FDJ, Bruno Armirail of Decathlon AG2R, Julien Bernard of Lidl-Trek, and Guillaume Martin of Cofidis bridged to make ten riders out front with 110KM to race. UAE controlled in the peloton and kept the break around 2 minutes. GC teams started their positioning battle at 49KM to go before the start of the final climbs. The surge from the peloton cut the gap to the break in half, down to 1 minute with 46KM to race. Healy, Carapaz, and Lazkano were the only ones remain out front over the top of the Col de Néronne. They started the Puy Mary with 50 seconds but were caught 1KM from the top on the steepest section of 13%. Tadej Pogačar of UAE attacked with 600M to the top and this time no one was able to immediately cover. Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike and Primož Roglič were the closest but they went over the top around 10 seconds behind with 31KM to go. A larger group with two of Pogačar's teammates, Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep, and Carlos Rodríguez of Ineos joined Vingegaard and Roglič before the start of the Col de Pertus, 35 seconds behind Pogačar. Vingegaard and Roglič soon dropped everyone else. With 1.5 to climb, Vingegaard dropped Roglič and was the solo chaser, 20 seconds behind Pogačar. Vingegaard got back on terms with Pogačar at the top of Pertus and the pair went over the top with 14KM to go and 45 seconds over Roglič and Evenepoel. Pogačar and Vingegaard stayed together to the finish. In the sprint, Vingegaard started at 150M, Pogačar got out of the saddle and sat back down. He tried again but could not come around Vingegaard. Vingegaard took the win and the 10 bonus seconds. Pogačar finished second with Evenepoel fighting behind in third, 25 seconds down.
