August 6, 2024 A much lumpier day than Stage 1 may offer an opportunity for puncheurs to leave the sprinters behind to fight for the win. Diego Pablo Sevilla of Polti-Kometa made the break again, this time with Gorka Sorarrain of Caja Rural, Xabier Isasa of Euskaltel-Euskadi, and Mario Aparicio of Burgo BH. Their gap hovered around 2 minutes for most of the day as DSM-Firmenich controlled. With 34KM to go, a very large crash at the front of the peloton caused many riders to hit the pavement. Numerous groups formed behind to make their way back on as the bunch called a temporary pause to gather teammates together. The pace increased 7KM later, after a regrouping, for the approach into the first passage of the narrow 1KM climb that will lead to the finish line. The break crested the climb 1 minute 15 seconds ahead with 23KM to race. Sorarrain attacked from the break with 14KM to go and extended his lead to the bunch, out to 37 seconds with 10.5KM to go. It was all back together with 6KM to go as the bunch were drag racing in color order all across the road. Decathlon AG2R led into the final uphill kilometer with Caleb Ewan of Jayco AlUla in second wheel being very attentive. With 750M to go, the Decathlon AG2R rider swung off as did Ewan and the reaction in the bunch took down riders behind. Ewan stayed near the front, following advances of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe and Lidl-Trek. Ewan started his sprint, holding off Roger Adrià of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe and Iván García Cortina of Movistar. In GC, Ewan took over the lead by count back, on the same time as Pavel Bittner of DSM-Firmenich.
