The final day should be one for the sprinters but the terrain may be difficult enough for eager teams to take advantage. Michael Leonard of Ineos, Patrick Gamper of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe and Pim Ronhaar of Lidl-Trek went on the attack with Q36.5 and Jayco AlUla chasing in the peloton.
Even with a strong chase, the gap remained constant at 2 minutes 20 seconds between 50 and 40KM to go. Ronhaar dropped out of the break at 25KM with a leg cramp, diminishing the chances of Leonard and Gamper staying away. The big surprise came when Caleb Ewan of Jayco AlUla was dropped at 20KM to go. He was the main favorite for the stage but could not stay in group when the pace increased over the final ramp. Davide Piganzoli of Polti-Kometa and Victor Lafay of Decathlon AG2R got a gap over the peloton before the descent off the final climb but they were stuck in no mans land. Lafay and Piganzoli were caught by the peloton with 5KM to go but Leonard and Gamper were doing a stellar job, holding 35 seconds.
Leonard attacked Gamper with 2.5KM to go, Gamper closed the gap and that cost the break dearly. Gamper never took another pull and the peloton caught them with 300M to go. DSM-Firmenich had the lead out perfect. Iván García Cortina of Movistar jumped and over took the DSM-Firmenich train but Pavel Bittner came around with 50M to go to take his second win of the week. Nicolò Parisini of Q36.5 was also able to nip around Cortina to take second place.
For the final GC, Sepp Kuss of Visma-Lease a Bike took the win ahead of Max Poole of DSM-Firmenich and Finn Fisher-Black of UAE.
