August 16, 2024 The UCI have been experimenting with limiting radios in the peloton and Stage 5 will have no radios at all for the riders. It shouldn't be of much consequence since it will likely be a bunch sprint but it will be something to look out for. Live footage was difficult at the start but Johan Jacobs of Movistar, Xabier Azparren of Q36.5, and Norbert Banaszek of the Polish National Team went up the road and had 5 minutes with 160KM to go. Ayco Bastiaens of Soudal Quickstep did nearly all of the work in the peloton from 160KM to 74KM to go when Jayco AlUla sent a rider to lend a hand. The break was swept up with 11KM to go by a peloton in full speed. A crash in the first 20 riders with 3KM to go strung the bunch out and anyone who touched the breaks was not going to get back into contention. Visma-Lease a Bike led through the final corner at 600M. Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe took over until 200M when Jordi Meeus started his sprint. Olav Kooij of Visma-Lease a Bike tried to come around Meeus but only offered a lead out to Tim Merlier of Soudal Quickstep. Merlier popped around Kooij then got Meeus only in the last 25M for his first win of the week. Meeus finished second with Kooij taking third. No places in the top 10 in GC changed.
