Place Name: Paseo De Cristóbal Colón
Address: Paseo De Cristóbal Colón 12, 41001 Sevilla, Seville, Spain
Details: August 21, 2024
We are only up to Stage 5 but this is one of the few remaining opportunities for the sprinters as they ride towards Seville through sweltering heat.
Ibon Ruiz of Equipo Kern Pharma and Txomin Juaristi of Euskaltel-Euskadi were the brave souls to go up the road and leave the security of the peloton. Alpecin-Deceuninck and Visma-Lease a Bike did the pace making in the peloton, always keeping the break between 3 and 4 minutes. At 45KM to go, the peloton went from switched off to completely switched on. They closed 2 minutes and caught the break in just 7KM.
The race entered the city center of Seville but the last 10KM was all on broad boulevards. With 1.3KM to go, Alpecin-Deceuninck took over with numbers. Wout Van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike jumped early to take advantage of a gap left open by Alpecin-Deceuninck and Kaden Groves was immediately beaten. Van Aert went to barriers on the left side of the road and had a clean run but Pavel Bittner of DSM-Firmenich was in the slipstream. Bittner came around Van Aert and got the win in a photo finish ahead of Van Aert and Groves.
