Details:
August 31, 2024 The break has had its own way this Vuelta and could get another opportunity today. The first half of the stage is one long false flat to the finish town of Villablino. The route then takes the riders on a 110KM clockwise loop over two categorized climbs including the Puerto de Leitariegos which tops out 16KM from the line before descending back into Villablino. Six riders got in the break for the longest stage of the race including Xandro Meurisse of Alpecin-Deceuninck, Harold Tejada of Astana, Victor Campenaerts of Lotto-Dstny, Isaac del Toro of UAE, Jhonatan Narváez of Ineos, and Marco Frigo of Israel-Premier Tech. Visma-Lease a Bike took control of the peloton to lay down their intention of going for the stage win, keeping the break within 3 minutes. At 107KM to go, the break passed through Villablino for the first time with a gap of 2 minutes. The gap kept creeping down, closing in on 1 minute and with 38KM to go, Narváez, Frigo and Tejada picked up the pace and went clear. Narváez was the last one caught with 20KM to go, about 3KM left to climb on the 22.7KM wide highway climb of Puerto de Leitariegos. At least 60 riders went over the top together for the descent and run to the finish. Alpecin-Deceuninck had five riders left for the lead out and took Kaden Groves through the final corner in second position. Groves started his sprint with 170M to go and held off Wout Van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike for his second win of La Vuelta. Another five bike lengths back was third place, Corbin Strong of Israel-Premier Tech.
