A lollipop route of 174KM is the second of three days of the Trittico Lombardo with seven laps of the Caramamma climb before the false flat downhill back to Legnano for the finish.
Stan Van Tricht of Alpecin-Deceuninck, Bart Lemmen of Visma-Lease a Bike, and Alessandro Pinarello of VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizanè were the last three remaining out front from the five-man original break. With 46KM to go and half of a lap remaining before coming back to Legnano, the three leaders had just over 1 minute on a chase group of Neilson Powless of EF-Education EasyPost, Alex Baudin of Decathlon AG2R, Roger Adrià of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe, and Pavel Sivakov of UAE and around 1 minute 15 seconds on the main peloton.
The break started the Caramamma climb for the final time with 32.7KM to go. They were holding 45 seconds to the chase group but had extended their to the peloton to 1 minute 40 seconds. Lemmen forced the pace and dropped Pinarello and Van Tricht who filtered back to the chase group. Lemmen held around 30 seconds but as he got to 14KM to go, the gap was dwindling to just 18 seconds on wide open roads that were perfect for a chase.
It was 13 seconds with 5KM to go but the cohesion behind still looked good. At 2KM from the line, it was just 8 seconds but the meters were running out and everyone was tying up under lactic acid. Lemmen was caught from the early break right at 1KM to go and the group of 7 would contest for the victory. Sivakov was first to attack at 800M but Adrià was on him straight away. Powless countered immediately after and got a decent gap. Van Tricht wound up his sprint and caught Powless with 200M to go and kept it turning to the line. He managed to hold on to take his first professional victory ahead of Baudin and Adrià. It was an incredible ride from Van Tricht who was dropped and caught from the early break to do a strong sprint for the win.
