Details:
July 9, 2025 The first of two ITT's is today and it could put reasonable gaps between the GC favorites. The route takes the riders on a counter-clockwise loop to the North of Caen towards the beaches of Normandy for 33 flat kilometers. There are not many sharp corners on the route either so the pure time trial specialists and top GC contenders should shine. Another enormous crowd gathered to see Yevgeniy Fedorov of XDS-Astana roll off the ramp as the first starter. U23 ITT champion Iván Romeo of Movistar set a fast early time of 37 minutes 44 seconds. It took a while but it was beaten by Edoardo Affini of Visma-Lease a Bike who rode a negative split and beat Romeo's time by nearly 30 seconds. French ITT Champion, Bruno Armirail of Decathlon AG2R, was 4 seconds down on Affini and he was the only rider to come close to the fastest time for the majority of the day. The first of the favorites to push towards the top of the leader board was Florian Lipowitz of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe who set the provisional third best time at 37 minutes 40 seconds. Lipowitz's teammate, Primož Roglič, put up a time of 38 minutes 1 second which was slower than expected although Roglič hasn't shown his best form this season. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep blitzed the course and put 33 seconds into Affini to set the fastest provisional time of 36 minutes 42 seconds. João Almeida of UAE-XRG was next in at 37 minutes 56 seconds which placed him sixth at the finish to that point. Kévin Vauquelin of Arkéa-B&B Hotels put in the surprise performance of the day by setting a time of 37 minutes 31 seconds which was good enough for provisional fourth place. Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike had a shocker of a time trial. He set a time of 38 minutes 3 seconds which was 1 minute 21 seconds slower than Evenepoel. When Tadej Pogačar of UAE-XRG crossed the line a few moments later, the Slovenian was 1 minute 5 seconds faster than Vingegaard which is a large margin to put into his main rival. The only rider on course at this point was Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Deceuninck. He finished the day 1 minute 44 seconds down and would lose the Yellow Jersey which was expected when the day began. The stage went to Evenepoel with an average speed of 53.950KPH. Pogačar took second place with Affini doing a great ride to finish in the final podium spot. After the times were calculated, Pogačar took over the race lead by 42 seconds on Evenepoel and 59 seconds to Vauquelin. Vingegaard sits in fourth at 1 minute 13 seconds, Matteo Jorgenson at 1 minute 22 seconds and van der Poel in sixth at 1 minute 28 seconds.
