The second and final ITT of this year's Tour is a mountain time trial up Peyragudes, the first mountain ITT since 2004 at Alpe D'Huez. It's quite a short day at just 10.9KM. The first 3.5KM are basically flat from Loudenvielle, passed Le Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle to the first time check in Escadaoux. The road ramps up on Peyragudes for 4.6KM at just over 8% with another time check after 7.5KM. The riders turn onto the Altiport with 400M to go to face the steep 16% grades up to the finish.
Roads closed to cars two days ago because the crowds were enormous. The weather could not have been better with the green mountains rising up to picture perfect skies, setting the scene for a great day of racing. Australian ITT champion, Luke Plapp of Jayco AlUla, not only set a fast early time but at 24 minutes 58 seconds, it put him in the hot seat for hours and gave him a good chance at a top stage result.
Adam Yates of UAE-XRG was the first to get close to Plapp. He gave it a really good push but finished 16 seconds down. The top of the GC started with Matteo Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike who went through the first check 9 seconds faster than Plapp but just 1 second faster at the second check. Primož Roglič of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe showed himself for the first time this Tour and put in a whopping 31 seconds over Jorgenson at the second check. Florian Lipowitz of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe went through the second check just 8 seconds down on Roglič. Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike, penultimate rider to leave the start house, set the fastest time at the second check, 28 seconds faster than Roglič and looking strong. A few moments later however, Tadej Pogačar of UAE-XRG came through and took another 23 seconds out of Vingegaard at the second check.
At the finish, the time of Plapp passed for Jorgenson by 4 seconds to put the American in provisional second place. It wasn't until Roglič came in that a new time was finally set, 24 minutes 20 seconds, 38 seconds faster than Plapp. Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quickstep had a difficult day and got overtaken by Vingegaard with just 50M to go for 2 minutes. The speed of Vingegaard however was impressive and good enough to beat Roglič's time by 44 seconds. It was not enough however because Pogačar was in the finish straight already and put 36 seconds into Vingegaard to take the stage win, his fourth in this Tour de France. Vingegaard took second on the stage with Roglič in third. Plapp finished the day with a very impressive top 5.
Pogačar now leads Vingegaard overall by 4 minutes 7 seconds. Evenepoel kept his third place but there are four riders within 1 minute 30 seconds that have their eye on a podium spot. Surprisingly, the only movement in the top ten was Oscar Onley of Picnic-PostNL who now sits fifth at 8 minutes 11 seconds, jumping Vauquelin by 4 seconds.
