May 20, 2025 The rest day is done and racing resumes in Tuscany with an ITT, starting in Lucca and finishing in the Piazza dei Miracoli in front of the leaning tower in Pisa. The course covers 28.6KM with two time checks, the first coming 8.5KM into the stage before the San Giuliano climb which is taken on from the easy side. The descent has multiple hairpins but once at the bottom, it's a straightforward run through the second time check at 20.5KM with just 8KM of flat, fast racing to go. Early morning rain put a damper on the start and there were reports coming through that Primož Roglič of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe crashed while doing the route recon. It seemed like he was alright but we won't know for sure until he heads down the ramp later in the day. Alexander Krieger of Tudor Pro Cycling got the race underway as the first starter and rolled down the ramp in between walls of pink clad tiffosi. Fortunately the roads dried up making the course much safer. The early riders were quite competitive with Ethan Hayter of Soudal Quickstep, Edoardo Affini of Visma-Lease a Bike, and Daan Hoole of Lidl-Trek finishing close with Hoole on top. Stage favorite Josh Tarling of Ineos went through the first time check 17 seconds up on Hoole but lost a stunning 21 seconds by the next check with 8KM to go. Tarling continued to leak time and finished 7 seconds behind Hoole, second place provisionally. Hoole kept his lead through all of the mid-table riders on GC with the top-20 still to come. Drops of rain started to fall and Derek Gee of Israel-Premier Tech was the first GC rider to have mostly wet roads for his effort. Many riders struggled with the wet conditions but Juan Ayuso of UAE-XRG and Primož Roglič of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe handled it best. No one was going to go faster than Hoole though who took the win with a speed of 52.787KM/HR, his first Grand Tour stage win of his career. Tarling held on for second place with Hayter in third. After race leader Isaac del Toro finished, the times were calculated and the GC was turned around. The top three stayed the same but now sit much closer as del Toro lost 48 seconds to Ayuso and now has a lead of just 25 seconds. Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious gained 29 seconds and sits at just 1 minute down. Roglič jumped five spots in GC and is 1 minute 7 seconds closer to the lead than he was at the start of the day. The big losers were Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek who lost 26 seconds, Richard Carapaz of EF-Education EasyPost who lost 30 seconds, and Egan Bernal of Ineos who lost 35 seconds.
