It's Time Trial day at the Volta ao Algarve. The GC is tightly packed with 14 riders within 30 seconds of Jan Christen, the race leader. The first 17.5 kilometers are generally flat but there are some undulations to negotiate before the final test, the 2.1KM Alto do Malhāo. At an average of over 9%, the riders will need to keep something in reserve to take on the steep climb if they want to make a difference in the GC. The effort should be around 30 minutes which is a great test for the riders for bigger appointments to come.
Jakob Söderqvist of Lidl-Trek put up a very strong early time. The Swedish National ITT Champ was dethroned by Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike. Van Aert had a storming ride up Alto do Malhāo which gave him the lead by 28 seconds. A number of riders posted times around 30 seconds back on van Aert, with the closest being Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious. That was until van Aert's teammate, Jonas Vingegaard, hit the line. The Dane crossed the line 11 seconds faster which was enough to take the stage win.
After everyone finished and the dust settled, Vingegaard was crowned the GC winner. João Almeida of UAE-XRG finished second overall, 15 seconds down with Laurens De Plus of Ineos taking third, 24 seconds behind Vingegaard.
