It is a traditional start to the 60th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico, the race between two seas. An 11.5KM Individual Time Trial on an out and back course in Lido di Camaiore will put a few seconds between riders in the GC before the action kicks off on the first road stage tomorrow. The start list is stacked with riders coming from Strade Bianche on Saturday as well as those looking to test their form with eyes on the Giro d'Italia in May.
Johan Price-Pejtersen of Alpecin-Deceuninck set a really good early benchmark. A handful of riders got within a few seconds but as riders came off the ramp and finished, his time continued to stand. The first rider to go faster than Price-Pejtersen was last year's winner of the Time Trial and second overall, Juan Ayuso of UAE-XRG, but only by 5 seconds. One of the last riders that could overhaul Ayuso was Filippo Ganna of Ineos. Ganna went through the time check at 5KM, 2 seconds down on Ayuso but the Italian saved same for back half. He stormed the return trip and crossed the line with a speed of 56.1KM/HR and 23 seconds ahead of Ayuso to take the stage win and redemption from his second place last year.
Some riders looking at the GC who did a strong performance were Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious, Derek Gee of Israel-Premier Tech, Kévin Vauquelin of Arkéa-B&B Hotels, Eddie Dunbar of Jayco AlUla, and Laurens De Plus of Ineos, all within about 20 seconds to Ayuso.
