The face of Milano-Torino, the oldest bike race in the world starting in 1876, seems to change year on year. Sprinters have won in years past as well as some of the biggest names in the sport. The last edition had more climbing leading into the finale but the route for this year is almost entirely flat across the Po plain until the riders get to the first of two climbs in the last 25KM of the 174KM race. The climb up to Superga is taken on twice. The first ascent is 4.2KM at 9.2% then they will plunge down into Torino for one counter-clockwise loop before hitting the Superga again. This time, instead of continuing on the main road, they turn left to go to the top which adds an extra 600M at 10% average, straight to the finish.
After about 10KM, the break of the day formed under sunny skies. With 55KM to go through the town of Cavagnolo, Jonas Rutsch of Intermarché-Wanty, Kristian Sbaragli and Davide Baldaccini of Solution Tech-Vini Fantini, Nariyuki Masuda of JCL Team UKYO, and Mattia Bais of Polti-VisitMalta had a lead of 1 minute 40 seconds and were being chased by UAE-XRG. It was a holding pattern until the lead out for positioning started 5KM before the first ascent. Uno-X Mobility, UAE-XRG, and EF-Education EasyPost were at the front for the turn onto the climb. Alessandro Covi of UAE-XRG did the pace making in the peloton and only Rutsch was still out front by the top of the climb but he only had a 15 second advantage. Around 35 riders were still in the peloton at the start of the descent with 19KM to go.
Rutsch put up a good fight and held off the peloton until 4.5KM to go at the base of the final ascent of Superga. Covi returned to set a really hard pace for UAE-XRG. He pulled off with 3.2KM to go to give way to Adam Yates. Yates pulled a group of six away from the rest including his teammate Isaac del Toro, Einer Rubio of Movistar, Tobias Johannessen of Uno-X Mobility, Alex Cepeda of EF-Education EasyPost, and Ben Tulett of Visma-Lease a Bike. A group of seven got back on for a brief moment when the road flattened 1.7KM from the line but as it tipped back up, Yates put on more pressure.
Del Toro went on the attack with 1.3KM to go and only Johannessen and Tulett could follow. Johannessen made his move at 550M but Tulett dragged him back with del Toro on his wheel. Tulett kept the pressure on but Tulett and del Toro were sitting in for what was a perfect lead out. Del Toro gave one more effort at 150M to go and the gap opened. He sprinted to the line with his skinsuit unzipped. He gave a bow and crossed the line in victory. Tulett came across next with Johannessen rounding out the podium in third.
