We were meant to have the third and final summit finish but the weather had other plans. Wind gusts of 100KM/HR were recorded at the top of the final climb to the Sanctuary of Queralt and had to be removed for safety reasons. As a result, the stage was shortened to just 72KM and the finish line was moved to Berga, where the race started, for another uphill sprint, not dissimilar to Sant Feliu de Guíxols on Stage 1.
The wind was so high that the race was neutralized for the first 45KM. They rolled along on the lap looking quite bored and cold until Primož Roglič of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe rode up to the car of the Race Jury. They spoke together as did other riders like Marc Soler of UAE-XRG, Omar Fraile of Ineos, and Juan Pedro López of Lidl-Trek. An agreement to race seemed to take place as riders down the bunch started to take off extra clothes to be ready. The race got underway with roughly 27KM to the finish line.
Carlos Verona of Lidl-Trek, Rémy Rochas of Groupama-FDJ, and Frank van den Broek of Picnic-PostNL broke clear and were joined by Diego Uriarte of Equipo Kern Pharma with 20KM to go. Ineos kept the pace high in the peloton and caught the leaders with 10KM to go. The GC times were taken with 5KM remaining and when the bunch crossed the line, all of the GC leaders were present within the group. The peloton was in one long line under 1KM to go. Quinn Simmons of Lidl-Trek attacked on a small rise at 700M; he got a good gap as other were looking to see who would chase. Pavel Bittner of Picnic-PostNL took up the chase and came charging through the last corners and up the finishing straight. Simmons was full of lactate but hung on for his first World Tour win. Bittner got to the back wheel of Simmons for second place but would be disappointed to have come so close. Corbin Strong of Israel-Premier Tech crossed the line in third but was relegated for deviating from his line which gave Anders Foldager of Jayco AlUla third place.
The GC remained unchanged with Juan Ayuso in the lead by 1 second to Primož Roglič and 21 seconds to Enric Mas with only the difficult circuits in Barcelona around the Alt de Montjuïc to come tomorrow.
