A large loop takes the riders around the West side of Lake Balaton from Veszprém in the North to Siófok, South of the lake. A five rider break went right from the start including Balázs Rózsa of Epronex-Hungary Cycling Team, Luca Cretti of MBH Bank Ballan CSB, Siebe Deweirdt of Flanders-Baloise, and János Pelikán and Michal Schuran of United Shipping. With 123KM to go, crosswinds were blowing from right to left and a rider near the front of the peloton was pushed off the road, crashed, and caused a massive pileup. Half of the Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe abandoned the race as a result.
The wind continued to blow but the race never fully split and the finish would be contested by the peloton. Jayco AlUla had the most firepower coming into 1KM with three riders ahead of Dylan Groenewegen. Luka Mezgec delivered Groenewegen perfectly to 200M but he could not capitalize. Danny van Poppel of Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe came around with 75M to go and took the win by half a bike length with Tim Torn Teutenberg of Lidl-Trek behind in third.
